Averil East Smith, 94 of Burleson passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, in Keene. Funeral: 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mountain Valley Funeral Home Chapel. Interment: Burleson Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain Valley Funeral Home. Averil was born Aug. 22, 1915, in Everman to Rayford and Lulu East and granddaughter of Joel East, who she spoke of often and loved dearly. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Everman and graduated from Everman High School in 1933 as class historian. She married Guy William Smith July 20, 1933, in Marietta, Okla. While making their home and raising their family in Burleson she worked for many years as a grocery cashier for several local stores. For 22 years Averil was also a wonderful caregiver for Guy. Averil will be missed by her family and friends. She will be remembered by many as a good friend, a great cook, an avid fisherman, and a sharp domino player, but mostly as our Granny. She loved her family and was happiest during family gatherings surrounded by all of her kids. The family would like to especially thank the staff at The Gardens at Chisholm Trail and Covenant Hospice for the care shown to Averil and her family. Averil was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years; her son, Don; her grandson, Dale; her great-grandson, Jordan; and her sister, Ruby Busbee. Survivors: Son, Frank Smith and wife, Barbara, of Burleson; grandson, Lee Smith and wife, Carol, of Rockport; granddaughter, Cindy Powell and husband, Mike, of Joshua; Linda Smith of Joshua; great-grandkids, Jessie, Jeremy and Gabrielle Smith, Gracie Smith, Michael and Justin Powell; great-great-granddaughter, Riley Smith; sister, Georgia Smith; several nieces and nephews.
