Betty Juanita Wetsel Liggett departed this world Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the age of 90 years young.
Beloved wife, cherished mother and Nana, sister, aunt, cousin, and treasured friend; she was a source of love and strength for everyone who had the privilege to know her and will be deeply missed.
Betty was born on September 18, 1934, in Bellevue, Texas to Ruby (Mayfield) and Wolford Wetsel. She grew up in Bellevue with her big sister, Maurine, big brother, Bud, and little sister, Joan, where Ruby and Wolford were ranchers and farmers. Along with helping her parents with the cattle and chores, Betty grew up with pastures to run in, tanks to fish and swim in, and country roads to travel that ended up holding many good memories with even better friends.
Betty's joyful spirit and loyal heart made it easy to be her friend. She had a range of deep friendships, some from youth that followed into adulthood standing 75 years strong, to new friendships she made as a young adult who quickly became family. All of the memories they created together were so cherished, as she would spend time with family laughing and laughing as she recalled the adventures of her life.
Betty's presence illuminated any room. She was often referred to as 'sassy' especially by her grandkids! Although she would often humbly decline the term of endearment, it was evident in her fierce competitiveness, her love of pestering them, and her unwavering support of them. Her smile and laughter drew others to her. Between her calming energy and intent listening, her kids' friends would often be found at their home seeking guidance and advice from her. Betty seemed to always have the right words to offer.
As to the beginning of her and Jimmy...
One morning, as Jimmy got off the school bus, he noticed a girl sitting on the edge of the flowerbed wall in front of their school. She was swinging her dangling legs carefree as the sun shone brightly and directly on her, and he thought she was the prettiest girl he'd ever seen. He knew right then, that was the girl he was going to marry. Although she told a friend she wasn't interested, Jimmy 'just happened' to find himself where she was for chances to talk to her. He was friends with her big brother, so he would 'visit him' as much as he could. He knew she felt the same about him when he saw his name written under hers on her schoolbook cover. Jimmy was smitten and they were inseparable, who could blame him?
They were married beginning their life in Bowie and a few months after, Jimmy was inducted into the Army. Betty made a long drive to California in a 1950 Ford with no air conditioning, a big deal for Betty as we know, to be with Jimmy. Here, made life long friendships that continued as their lives moved forward.
Two years later, Jimmy was discharged and they bounced back and forth between Fort Worth and Itasca, before finally settling in Fort Worth, where they would raise their family.
This union was the beginning of a love story that lasted 76+ years. In March 2025 they would celebrate 72 years of marriage.
Betty and Jimmy were inseparable and are the loves of each other's lives.
Their incredible bond created a son and daughter which Betty lovingly referred to as the best years of her life.
She couldn't imagine it was about to get even better. Betty was blessed with 6 grandkids and 2 great grandkids. All of which got the honor of growing up with Nana. She was a constant in their lives with her intentional presence; pouring her love, wisdom, faith and prayers, laughter, protection and most importantly, her "sassiness" into each of them. They are all better and a little bit shinier because of her.
Betty and Jimmy loved to travel. Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Europe, Alaska, Caribbean and Mediterranean cruises. They also made every U.S. state with the exception of Iowa!
You could find her playing volleyball with her kids and neighbors in their backyard, at birthday parties, roller skating and jumping into pools. Or if you were ready for a fight powered by laughter, you could find her in a ruthless game of Spoons, SkipBo and any game insisted on by her kids and grandkids.
Devoted to truly knowing and showing up for her family, Betty made it a priority to attend and celebrate at every theatrical, sporting, and milestone event. She is a source of inspiration and taught us the importance of family and unconditional love.
This gift will continue on for generations to come.
We are so thankful for her radiant presence in our lives. She will be dearly missed.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby (Mayfield) and Wolford Wetsel; brother Bud Wetsel; sister Maurine (Wetsel) Bell.
She leaves to carry on her legacy to her beloved husband Jimmy Liggett; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Genevieve Liggett; daughter and son-in-law, Janice (Liggett) and Brent Mulliniks; grandkids, Kyndel (Liggett) and husband Dannon Wells; Tori Liggett; Kayla Mulliniks; Latham Liggett and wife Lindsey; Shannon Mulliniks; Makenzie Mulliniks; and great-grandkids, Elias and Cora Wells.
