Charles Evert Massey

Charles E. Massey, 74, a retired State Farm Insurance Agent in Burleson, passed away on July 23, 2013 after a long illness of heart condition and leukemia. Funeral : 11:00 AM Friday at First Baptist Church of Burleson with burial to be at Burleson Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 6-8 PM Thursday at Mountain Valley Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that any memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Burleson Building Fund. Charles was born on August 23, 1938 near Burleson. He was the youngest of 5 children born to Edgar and Leota Stephens Massey. He lived in the Burleson area most of his life. His family moved to Fort Worth in 1951, where he attended and graduated from Poly High School in 1956, but he still loved Burleson. While attending high school he worked at Berry Street Supermarket and enjoyed playing church league basketball for Harmony Baptist Church. He was associated with Foremost Dairies in 1958 and became a wholesale route salesman in 1959. In 1961 he married Patricia Richardson and they moved back to Burleson in 1963. He received the Distinguished Salesman Award (Salesman of the Year) from Foremost Dairies in February, 1967. In December, 1967, he became a State Farm Agent in Burleson and his awards as an agent were many. He always said that the people of Burleson have been fantastic to him and he appreciated every one of them. He wanted to always say "thanks" to his customers for their loyalty. A heart condition forced an early retirement in 1997. He had always said he would never be a part time agent because his customers deserve better. Charles loved the Lord and was a member of First Baptist Church in Burleson since February 20, 1965. He served on the committee that drafted the original Home Rule Charter for Burleson which the voters voted on and approved in April, 1969. He was a member of the Burleson Lions Club where he served as Vice-President in 1971-72 and President in 1972-73. He served as a zone chairman in 1973-74 of District 2-E-2 and was Deputy District Governor for District 2-E-2 in 1974-75. He was able to influence a local beverage company through his friendship that his Lions Club needed a trailer to be used by the club. He was a member of the Burleson Masonic Lodge, No. 649, and he was a former director and served as 2nd Vice-President of the Burleson Chamber of Commerce in the 1980's. He served twice as President of the Burleson Quarterback Club (now Booster Club) in 1969-70 and again from 1970-71. In 1992-93 that same beverage company and Massey gave Burleson Independent School District a new scoreboard for Burleson High School football stadium (now Kerr Middle School). He was an avid golfer and was known as "Big Daddy" by his golfing friends. Charles and his wife, Patricia, enjoyed traveling in their motor home and had been to all the states except 3, when he became unable to drive. He enjoyed playing golf, working in the yard, and most of all he was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Wilson; brother, Billy Massey; brother-in-laws - M.A. Richardson, Bill Richardson, W.C. Richardson, Pete Richardson, Arthur Williams, and L.W. Spinks; sister-in-law - Clara Williams. Survivors: Wife, Patricia Massey, of Burleson; Children - Todd Massey and wife, Lori, of Alvarado; Trent Massey and wife, Heather, of Flower Mound; Tamara Lewis and husband, Darrin, of Burleson: Grandchildren - Megan Massey, Hunter Massey, Justin Massey, Dakota Massey, Savannah Massey, Wyatt Massey, Mary Massey, Wesley Massey, Hope Lewis, Hayden Lewis, and Harrison Lewis. Brothers - C.R.
