STEPHENVILLE -- Herbert Leo "Hup" Wayland, 79, a retired construction supervisor, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at his home in Stephenville. Graveside service: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Greenacres Memorial Park in Cleburne. "Hup" was born June 24, 1928, in Prairie Hill, Limestone County, to William Ray and Olive Duncan Wayland. He grew up on the family farm riding horses. In 1940 Hup's family moved to Fort Worth. He graduated from Poly Tech High School in 1945. Hup rode his first bull in 1942 at the Cobb Park Arena in Fort Worth. His first bull ride changed his life forever. For the next 22 years, Hup would go to every rodeo he could. In 1945 he started riding bareback horses. He rode bulls and bareback horses until 1951. From 1951 to 1964 he would ride bareback horses. Although cancer took his life, it never took the cowboy's dry sense of humor. Hup was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Louise, on Feb. 5, 2000. Survivors: Sons, Larry Wayland and wife, Mary of Paradise, John Wayland of Stephenville; brother, William D.
