Jack Dalton Shelton

February 22, 1936 — June 6, 2023

Blanco

Jack Dalton Shelton was born in Blanco, TX on February 22, 1936 to Clarence and Susie Chapman Shelton.  He passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s early Tuesday morning June 6, 2023 when his heavenly Father peacefully called him home into His loving arms to join with The Father, Son, Holy Spirit, family and friends along with all other believers.

Jack spent many of the early years of his life in Lexington, TX with his mom and siblings.  He moved to Burleson around the age of 10 where he made many life long friends and began attending Bethesda Baptist Church.

Jack was proud of his service to his country and his community.  On July 25, 1957 Jack enlisted into the US Army.  He received his basic training in Ft. Carson, CO and served in Munich, Germany from 1958 to July 22, 1959 in Company C 1st Battalion 21st Infantry.  Jack was trained as a heavy weapons Infantryman and earned honors as Expert in Bayonet, Rifle Sharpshooter, and received a Good Conduct Medal.  He was honorably discharged on July 24, 1963 from the 8th USA Corp Reserves.  After returning to the states, Jack served as a police officer in Cleburne, TX from 1961 to 1965 where he was known as the officer who would write his own mother a ticket.  He was always eager to tell the story of the time he wrote a Johnson County Judge a ticket for running a stop sign and at the Judge’s protest Jack boldly proclaimed “Judge, no one is above the law”.  He went on to work for Burleson PD and as a deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Earl King until 1971. From 1965 to 1988 Jack worked for Santa Fe as a locomotive engineer.

In October 1986 Jack married his sweetheart Joan Campbell.  After his retirement from Santa Fe he enjoyed full time traveling the States with Joan and making new friends.  Eventually, they settled back down in Burleson where he spent his days enjoying time with family, drinking coffee with friends at local cafes, and going to baseball and football games. He also enjoyed church fellowships, being a part of the local COPS program as well as volunteering at Huguley Hospital.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years Joan Shelton; parents, Clarence and Susie Shelton, brothers; Eddie Shelton, Billie Shelton and Allen Shelton and sister Mary Sue Davies; granddaughter Stacey Shelton, grandson Jared Varela, and step-son Greg Martin.

He is survived by his sons Richard Shelton and wife Kelly of Burleson; Randall Shelton and wife Tammy of Alvarado; Ronny Shelton and wife Wendi of Alvarado; stepdaughter Teresa Wilkins of Hawkins.
