Joyce Waggoner, 94, departed on October 9, 2019 to join the love of her life and husband of 61 years, Joe Waggoner.
She was strong for her family. She cared for Joe through his battle with Parkinson while simultaneously working a job and finding time to knit, quilt and sew for her family. She was a seamstress at home all her life, making her children's clothes and later prom and wedding dresses. She had all girls and stayed busy. She never lost her love of sewing and in later years made her version of Raggedy Ann dolls for family and church bazaar.
After Joe passed in 2005, she fought her grief by volunteering at Huguley Hospital until a broken shoulder sidelined her. She then began doing meals on wheels in Burleson as long as she could. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and made many dear friends everywhere she went. She loved every minute of her new social life shared with friends and transporting them in her little blue Jeep with a Cowboy Star on the back wheel cover (which she made). She gave up driving at 91 and stayed closer to home with family. Her children were never far from her side. She gave up her beloved home in 2018 and moved into assisted living until she was transferred to Community Hospice Burleson the last night where she rested peacefully for her glorious journey.
Joyce was born on a freezing night in Luella, Texas on December 28, 1924 to William Mullens and Bertha Hughes. She was the only daughter with four brothers, which is probably where she learned her strength. She graduated from Sherman High School in 1942 and was on the pep squad. She met Joe while working at the military PX and were married in 1943. Lost first child to pneumonia in 1944 while Joe was at war in Okinawa and he never got home to see her. She retired from JC Penney at 74 to care completely for her husband.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Waggoner; daughters, Sandra Gail Whiting and Jo Helen Waggoner as well as grandson Joshua Barton.
She is survived by daughters; Sherry Christian and Barbara Benningfield. Grandchildren; Dawn Ready, Courtney Barge, Kelly Keeton, Clinton Benningfield, Vanessa Connelly, Tiffany Fitzsimmons and Amanda Whiting. Also 18 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. She loved them all with all her heart.
Our family extends thanks to all friends and caregivers who have helped so compassionately in the final months of her life journey.
