Mary Evelyn (Nelson) Haun was born on May 18, 1931, in Mount Calm, Texas. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2025, holding hands with her daughters and son-in-law. A funeral service will be held at Burleson Church of Christ on Monday, March 31, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held at Mountain Valley Funeral Home on Sunday, March 30, from 6:00-8:00 PM. The burial will take place on Wednesday, April 2, at 10:00 AM at South Park Cemetery in Roswell, New Mexico.
Mary Evelyn grew up on the family dairy farm with her parents, John Bradley and Florence Elizabeth, and seven siblings: brothers, Ralph, John (JB), Andrew (Bill), Jack, Tom, and sister, Sue.
She attended and graduated from Waco High School. She received her teaching degree from Abilene Christian College. Mary began her teaching career at Mary Louise Phillips Elementary School in Fort Worth. She moved to Roswell, New Mexico, in 1956, after being persuaded by two of her college roommates, Audrey and Glenna. They remained friends until Mary's passing, a friendship that spanned nearly 77 years. It was in Roswell that she would meet her future husband, Lloyd.
Mary and Lloyd Odra Haun were married on August 25, 1957, in her brother, Ralph and his wife, Georgia's, backyard in Waco, Texas. They began their life together in Roswell, New Mexico, where they welcomed two daughters, Anna Sue on November 1, 1958, and Sarah Ellen on November 28, 1960. Mary taught at Edgewood Elementary, Pecos Elementary, and retired from Military Heights Elementary School. The family were members at South Main Church of Christ and Country Club Road Church of Christ.
Mary and Anna moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1994, to be closer to Sarah's family. While in Hobbs, she became an active member at Jefferson Street Church of Christ, was an avid gardener, and the biggest fan of her three grandkids.
Mary and Anna once again moved to be with Paul and Sarah in Joshua, Texas, in 2008. She quickly settled into a new church family in Burleson, got her yard up to "Mary" standards, and enjoyed her walks around the neighborhood.
In 2018, Mary and Anna moved in with Sarah and Paul. This would become a sweet time of bonding in the years that followed. She cherished the time spent with her great-grandkids and enjoyed being Grammie to them.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Anna; daughter, Sarah Elkins (Paul); grandkids, Kathryn Tobias (Brandon); Paul (Kendall); Preston (Tylar Jo); and grandson by choice, Teron Bolton. She is also survived by nine great-grandkids, Payton, Londyn, and Eastyn Tobias; Glover, Bolton, and Grady Elkins; and Anderson, Bennett, and Callahan Elkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents, John Bradley and Florence Elizabeth; and her brothers, Ralph, JB, Bill, and Jack. She is survived by her siblings, Thomas Nelson and his wife, Pat, and Sue Trice and her husband, Marvin, along with many extended family and friends.
Because of her decision to be a lifelong follower of Christ and provide her family with a legacy of faith, we don't grieve as the world does, but we grieve with hope.
The family wishes to thank Rachel Skiles for taking incredible care of our Mama and Grammie in the last year.
Memorials may be sent to New Mexico Christian Children's Home, 1356 NM-236, Portales, NM, 88130.
