Mather Poe Owen

Mather Poe Owen, 92, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, was born in Fort Worth, Texas March 7, 1930, to Wood and Lona Owen as the youngest of 5 children. He passed away peacefully in Burleson, Texas on November 27, 2022.

Mather proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. While on leave from the navy, he married the love of his life Nettie Jane Brown on July 13, 1953. He then earned a Bachelor of Business in Education at North Texas State College of Denton and earned his Masters of Divinity at Southern Methodist University of Dallas. He taught 2 years of high school business in Gail, Texas before going into the ministry and becoming an ordained Methodist minister. While attending seminary Mather was associate pastor at Westcliff United Methodist in Fort Worth for 2 years and then pastor at Palmer United Methodist Church for 2 years. Following graduation from seminary Mather was employed for 29 years as a chaplain for the state of Texas. First at Gatesville State School for Boys, second at Wichita Falls State Hospital MHMR, and third at Vernon State Hospital MHMR.  After retiring Mather was on staff as a pastoral counselor as well as an active member of Pathway Church for many years.

He enjoyed working in his garden, tinkering on his Studebaker, playing golf, taking trips with Jane and attending extra-curricular activities for his grandchildren.  He also had a true joy for music his entire life from singing in a gospel music quartet with his family to playing his ukulele, harmonica, banjo, and using his strong voice by singing in the Pathway church choir.

Mather is survived by Jane, his loving wife of 69 years, son Rick Owen and wife Dallas, daughters Karen Finkler and husband Todd, Brenda Morris and husband Phillip, Glenda Michelin and husband Greg. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 9 grandchildren spouses, 11 great-grandchildren, nephew Jerry Owen of Virginia and niece Melody Foster of North Carolina.

Visitation will be on Thursday, December 1, 2022 5:30-7:30 pm at Pathway Church 325 NW Renfro St. Burleson, TX 76028. The Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, December 3, 2022 11:00 am also at Pathway Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pathway Church, Burleson, TX.
