JOSHUA -- Pauline "Polly" Guthrie, 73, a retired coach, teacher and beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011. Funeral: 2 p.m. Wednesday, NorthPointe First Baptist Church, Joshua. Interment: Caddo Cemetery, Joshua. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Mountain Valley Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to NorthPointe First Baptist Church of Joshua. Polly was born Sept. 8, 1938, in Shreveport, La., to George Patrick and Pauline Brumfield Coker. She was a longtime resident of Joshua. Polly grew up near Bradley, Ark. She was a graduate of Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark., and received her master's from Texas Woman's University in Denton. She taught and coached girls athletics in Arkansas and Joshua. She also coached tennis at the University of Texas Arlington. Polly taught a women's Sunday school class for many years and served on numerous committees in her church. She was a dedicated Christian. Polly was past president of the Johnson County Republican Women; District Director of Senatorial District 22, Texas Federation of Republican Women; and a member of the National Republican Congressional Advisory Committee. Polly also taught fifth-grade students the Bill of Rights for several years on Constitution Day each year. Survivors: Husband of 47 years, Jack Guthrie of Joshua; daughter, Patricia VanBebber and husband, David, of Auburn, Ill.; sons, Tim Guthrie and wife, Heidi, of Knoxville, Tenn., John Guthrie and wife, Cassie, of Joshua, Paul Guthrie and wife, Holly, of El Campo; sister-in-law, Jaqueline Guthrie Massey of Port Richey, Fla.; seven grandchildren; extended family; and friends.
