Retta Drummond Coleman

October 26, 1931 — November 11, 2023

Retta Ann Drummond Coleman, of Burleson, Texas, passed away November 11, 2023. She was 92 years old, born on October 26, 1931. She was the youngest of two children born to Walter William Drummond and Beulah Wilson Drummond in Edinburg, Texas. They were originally from the Venus, Texas area but had moved to Edinburg to grow citrus crops and had a farm.

When Retta was four years old, the family moved back to the Burleson area after a hurricane devastated their farm in Edinburg. She grew up on the family farm in the Bethesda area where she graduated from Burleson High School in 1950. After graduation she took a business course and secured a position at Commercial Credit in downtown Fort Worth. She has always been a faithful member of the Burleson Church of Christ. Retta's mother and several other ladies were instrumental in establishing a church in Burleson in the 1930's and 40's. Retta met her husband F.W. (PeeWee) Coleman at church and they were married in 1954. They were very active in teaching Bible classes and loved to host campouts for the youth.

Retta's vegetable and flower gardens were always bountiful. She especially loved irises and roses. When her four children were growing up, she made most of their clothes, took care of countless farm animals and always prepared home-cooked meals. Over the years, she took various jobs to help support the family and the farm. When she was 65, she became a certified nurse aide and she worked for 10 years as a hospice nurse aide. In her last ten years of life, she made custom quilts for all of her children and grandchildren.

Retta is survived by her son Lee Coleman and his wife Dorothy, daughter Mary Ann Bock, son Wylie Coleman and wife Lori, and daughter Laura Lynn Goleman and husband Jack, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband PeeWee, her parents and her sister Nina Fair.
