On March 9, 1943, Richard Douglas Haub was born in Omaha, Nebraska to the late William Anthony Haub and Bernice Evelyn Haub. Dick grew up in Omaha with his parents and sister Carol Ann Rehnquist. Dick graduated from North High High School in Omaha, NE and then attended the University of Omaha briefly. After his parents divorced, he unenrolled from college to join the Navy where he served almost 4 years. During his years of service, he was aboard the USS Yellowstone, Destroyer Tender in the Mediterranean Sea and was in the preflight program. After serving in the Navy, he attended the University of Omaha while working part time in the hardware department at Sears. He graduated from UNO in 1965. After earning his certificate of completion in Medical Records Administration from St. Mary’s College, Dick went to work at Clarkson Hospital. He later went on to work for Fruehauf-Hobbs trailers where he was transferred to Texas. After Hobbs trailers closed Dick went to work for Valeo where he worked until they closed their doors. He finished up his career in the HR department at Mrs. Baird’s. Dick met his loving wife Bertie at a bowling alley in 1971. The first thing she said to him was “you bowl like a chicken” and the rest is history! They married on July 1, 1972, and had their son Richard Douglas Haub II on August 31, 1973. Their daughter, Rhonda Michelle Haub was born on July 7, 1982. It is hard to capture a snapshot into someone’s life, but what better way than through the eyes of his grandchildren.
Each was asked to share their favorite memory of their grandpa: Brandon,19- I remember seeing him at several of my track and cross country meets. Grandpa would always ask about when and where the meets were and he attended as many as he could to cheer me on. When I would stop by his house after a haircut, he always asked me about school. Before I left for college he texted me some advice, “Going away to college will be the start of a new adventure for you. Embrace it, enjoy it, study hard and immerse yourself in the experience. The harder you work and the more you learn will help to prepare you for a future filled with success. Our prayers are with you.” Jocelyn, 17- Papa always helped me with my school papers, but one in particular stood out. I had to write a satire essay and had no clue what topic to choose. We were all gathered in the kitchen when I asked him for advice. Papa said to write the paper about flatulence. This led to many many jokes about flatulence and we all died laughing. Aubrey, 16- Brandon and I would stop at grandma and grandpa’s house after we got haircuts, he would give us advice about driving and random other things. Grandpa was so smart and it was fascinating listening to him. He knew everything and was always giving great advice and carrying on conversations. Also when we were little we were over at his house and grandpa made Jocelyn and I popcorn and the 3 of us just sat and watched a movie together. Caiden, 14- Papa took me to school every morning and on the way we would play history trivia games in the car. He always knew the answers and I was clueless. River, 11- I remember when all of us grandkids went over to their house to swim. Grandpa was out there grilling us hot dogs and watching us swim. He also gave me random advice. He told me how snakes can wrap up around the wheel of the tire and get into your car and to watch out for that. Mia, 9- I remember him at the New Year’s party, he was so nice. Brynlee, 5- I like to talk to paw paw about all the goals that I scored in soccer. That was a very small part of his very big story. Dick’s legacy will live on for generations to come. While each of his grandchildren have different memories of him, they all encompass the same beliefs; family, togetherness and loyalty. Dick was always there and present for his family.
