JOSHUA -- Robert Augusta Slack, 80, passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at his home in Joshua. Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday in Mountain Valley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Gee officiating. Interment will follow in Union Hill Cemetery in Joshua. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Mr. Slack was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Irving to Robert Augusta and Ethel Hubbard Slack. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Joshua and a retired engineer from Southwestern Bell where he worked for 38 years. Mr. Slack was a U.S. Army veteran. He represented his community through many service positions, including the Volunteer Fire Department, former president of the Joshua School Board, Planning and Zoning Board member for the City of Joshua and a Lions Club member. He was elected to three terms to serve as justice of the peace for Precinct 2 Johnson County. Mr. Slack was a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason in the Masonic Lodge and The Royal Order of Scotland. He was named Citizen of the Year in 2001 in recognition of his many years of service to the community. A special heart-felt appreciation to his friends, Joe Lewis, Walter Young and the rest of the family at the dialysis center in Cleburne, as well as, all the doctors and nurses there and the dear ones who took care of him at his home. His parents preceded Mr. Slack in death. Survivors: He is survived by his brother, Dr. Jim Slack and wife, Shirley, of May; beloved friend and companion, Mary Horton of Joshua; godchildren, Ray Horton and wife, MaLisa, Lana Davis and husband, Rob, all of Joshua; grandchildren, Ryan and Riley Davis and Jacob and Emily Horton of Joshua; two nephews and four nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
