Ron Harmon, 76, passed away May 31, 2015, in Crowley. Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Mountain Valley Funeral Home. Interment: 1:30 p.m. at DFW National Cemetery. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Ron was born Dec. 27, 1938, in Nowata, Okla., to Carl and Thelma (Collier) Harmon. Ron attended Nowata Schools, graduating in 1957. He attended Central State University on a football scholarship. He later completed his college degree at the University of Permian Basin. Ron served four years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Vashon Island, in Seattle, Wash. He played football and baseball while serving in the Army. Ron was president of Harmon Consulting Inc. Harmon was widely recognized for his experience and innovative leadership as a county commissioner. He was honored by the Judges and Commissioners Association of the state of Texas for having completed the advanced certification and receiving the prestigious designation of a certified county commissioner. Harmon was honored with a special presentation by the Texas Department of Transportation with the "Texas Roadhand Award," for his outstanding efforts and accomplishments in Texas. His name will be permanently placed on the Texas Roadhand Roll, in the Greer Transportation Building, in Austin. Harmon served as the chairman of the North Central Texas Council of Governments Regional Transportation Council. Ron was presented the annual "William Pitstick Award" by the North Central Council of Governments. This award is for the person who most exemplifies the demonstrated merits of regionalism, involving local governments in north central Texas. Harmon previously served as president of North Central Texas Council of Governments. He also served as vice chairman, secretary and a member of the executive board. Harmon was the recipient of the American Heart Association, "Person of the Year," for his community and civic involvement and the efforts provided for enhancement of the community. Harmon served as an advisory board member for Huguley Hospital. He is the former chairman of the Johnson County "First Call" emergency number. Harmon was a recipient of the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce prestigious "Citizen of the Year Award." This award represents his community efforts and accomplishments. Harmon received the "Life Time Membership Award," from the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce. This award represents his efforts in chamber membership recruitment. The award is one of three to be awarded by the chamber. He was nominated by his employees in Johnson County for the "Boss of the Year." This recognition was sponsored by the Burleson Business and Professional Women's Club. Harmon is a former city manager of Burleson. He served as assistant city manager and director of personnel for the city of Odessa. Harmon is a former vice president and member of the board of directors of the American Cutting Horse Association. He was president and named "Cattle Baron" of the Fort Worth Chisholm Round-Up. Thank you Commissioner Harmon for the Ron Harmon Sub-Courthouse, the 23 years working on the Chisolm Trail Parkway, the toll road linking the lighted corridor from Fort Worth to Burleson. This project was a part of Ron's introduction to key stakeholders and community leaders. Ron was a member of the First Methodist Church and was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors: spouse, Paula Harmon of Burleson; daughters, Candi Crawford of Burleson, Heidi Smith of Colfax, Calif., and Cyndy Starr of Cisco; sons, Mike Harmon of Southerland, Ore., and Keith Dillingham of Breckenridge; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends.
