Shirley Istance Flowers was born in Copdock, Suffolk, United Kingdom on
January 12, 1935, to David and Mabel (Causon) Istance. She passed away
peacefully Thursday morning, July 13, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Shirley and her two sisters, Valerie and Christine, grew up in the countryside of
England and Wales to escape the bombings of London during WWII, and they reunited together
in London after the war. Shirley moved to Chicago in 1958 as a nanny to an editor at Life
Magazine. In Chicago, she met and married the love of her life, Gayle Flowers, on October 7,
1961. Shortly after they married, they moved to Fort Worth, Texas.
Shirley was proud to gain her US Citizenship on February 9, 1970, but she still loved all things
British. She enjoyed being a member of the Daughters of the British Empire and the life-long
friendships she made in that organization. She took many trips to England to visit her
family, and she enjoyed it when her English family visited Texas. Shirley was an animal lover,
with a particular fondness for cats. She was known to keep her hands busy with knitting and
crocheting, she made many blankets for family and friends.
Shirley was a devoted wife to Gayle, and a loving mother to Cindy, Jeff, and Amy.
After the Grandkids were born, they became the center of her life.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Christine.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gayle; daughter Cindy Sanders and her
husband Gene; son Jeff Flowers; daughter Amy Flowers; granddaughter Sierra
Attaway, husband Travis, and their children Thea, Riley, and Luke; grandson
Justin Flowers; granddaughter Mariah Horiuchi, husband Tyler, and their son
Bennett; sister Valerie Testa and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to all her caregivers during her time at Elan Westpointe, they were very good to her and she adored them. Also, thanks to Hope Hospice for their loving care.
