Shirley was a longstanding member of Boulevard Baptist Church, where she participated in the daycare, janitorial, choir, and Sunday School ministries, and ladies’ group. Her favorite activity, however, was attending church camp with the kids and camping with her family. Shirley was all about her family. Every event was held at her house, from summer around the pool, to enjoying holidays around her kitchen table. Even when there wasn't a holiday, she would get everyone together to play dominoes and cards. She was also an avid sports fan and never missed watching the Dallas Cowboys or Texas Rangers play.
