Travis Andrew King

Travis King, Sr. experienced life’s last great adventure March 12, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Travis was born on the Uncle Andrew Jordan farm four miles north of Carlton, Texas on October 7, 1923.  At the age of six weeks, his family moved to their newly purchased farm in the Olin community of Hamilton County, Texas where he maintained a permanent home address for the next fifty-odd years.  He graduated from Carlton High School in 1940.  After graduation, he was first employed at Hob Grocery Store in Carlton and later at the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation in San Diego, California.

Travis was drafted in the army in 1943 and served in the European Theater of Operations with George Company, 7th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.  He was awarded the EAME Medal with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Star and others.  He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant on his birthday, October 7, 1945.

Travis studied under the GI Bill of Rights and obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas Technical College (Texas Tech) Lubbock, Texas and later, his M.Ed. from Texas A& M University. His first professional job was that of County Agricultural Agent, Jim Hogg County, where he met his beloved wife of 58 years, Lidy.  He was transferred in 1956 to the same position in Willacy County.  From there he joined the Agency for International Development as a Foreign Service Agent, where he served in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala City, Saigon, College Station, Bangkok, Washington DC, and San Jose, Costa Rica.

Travis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Joshua, Texas and a member of the Outreach Sunday School Class, where he served as a pall bearer.

Travis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lidy, his son Damon, his father, Cyrus and mother Vera Roe King, his brother Damon L. King (KIA, WWII) and his sister, Shirleen Sowell.

Travis is survived by and will be greatly missed by his children, Jimmy King and wife, Becky, M. Cherie Hundley and husband, Craig, Travis King, Jr. and wife, Donna; his grandchildren, Casey King, Ginny Jaeger and her husband, Andrew, Paul Rossi King, Lidy Nicole Castillo and her husband, Adrian, Tia Beckerich and her husband Kameron, and Sophie King; his great grandchildren, Julia, Jack, Sally, Clark, Lidy Isabella, Tristan, Olivia, Ella and Audrey and a host of family and friends.
