Born July 8th, 1922 in Fort Worth, Texas to William Griffith Churchill and Ida Mae Humes Churchill. She graduated from Fort Worth Pascal High School. In 1944 she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Texas Christian University followed by a Master of Arts in British Literature also from Texas Christian University in 1964. Virginia worked for Delta Airlines at Dallas Love Field as Stewardess and then Southwest Travel Services of Fort Worth. She met Billy Gene Campbell on a blind date and they married on June 24th, 1948 at Magnolia Avenue Christian Church in Fort Worth. The couple lived in Fort Worth until 1950 when they moved to Brownwood, Texas to manage a family ranch. In 1956 they left Brownwood and moved to Joplin, Missouri where their son was born in 1958. In 1964 Virginia began her teaching career with the R-VIII School District where she would teach High School English for 25 years. Following Billy’s death in 1992 Virginia was devastated. The love and help from family and friends helped her to fulfill their dream of travelling the world. In 2000 she moved to Joshua Texas to be near family.
Virginia was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma (Teachers Society), the Joshua Study Club, American Association of University Women, TCU Women’s Ex, and the Retired Teachers of Texas.
She is survived by one son, Russell Churchill Campbell and his wife Cynthia Esther Campbell, and three grandchildren Lt William Robert Campbell of the US Army, Sarah Jane Campbell of Brooklyn, New York and Katelynn Jessie Campbell of Burleson, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Dorthy Gene Churchill Scott.
Virginia was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Joplin Missouri, and most recently the First United Methodist Church of Joshua, Texas.
Visitation will take place at Mountain Valley Funeral Home from 6-8pm Thursday, December16th. There will be a Graveside Service at Laurel Land Memorial Park of Fort Worth at 10am on Friday December 17th followed by a Celebration of Life at First United Methodist Church of Joshua at 1pm.
